They say that to travel is one of the best things that you can give yourself. I would like to agree to that statement. It is. It really is one of the best things you can give yourself. Some people splurge on the latest gadgets or on new clothes, but these things fade and they go out of style. Travelling does not, and the memories you have made in your heart will be kept forever.
I have been travelling for more than three years now, and I would like to think that I have met quite a bunch of interesting people from different parts of the world. From my point of view, I have studied these types of travellers and have concluded that there are five types of travellers in the world. They are as follows:
The Luxurious Traveller
From the name itself, ‘luxurious’. These are the people who does not care whether they are paying for a helicopter ride or a vintage type of wine. They go all in when it comes to travelling. They check into the best five start hotels in their destinations, and they dine at Michelin Star restaurants. They don’t expect anything less, because they are ready to pay for the best things this life has to offer.
The Budget Traveller
Again, we can determine this type of traveller from its name. These are the type of people who are so thrifty. They work hard for their money and whenever they go on trips, they specifically make a budget itinerary. They stick to their budget but they don’t let this get in the way of them having their fun and enjoyment. They might be checked into a hostel in the middle of nowhere or you might see them at the local night market eating their hearts away. They value money, but not as much as the memories they will be making on this trip.
I would like to think that I belong to this category because I work hard for my money and I like the challenge of travelling on a budget. It’s great, if I am going to be honest.
If you are not familiar with the term ‘couchsurfer’, let me enlighten you. These are the type of people who basically just use the app Couchsurfing and surf on random people’s couch. These people may or may not be on a strict budget. Sometimes, these people are after the stories and the vibe of the locals and the food.
I have met someone who couchsurf-ed through New York City for a year. His name is Jordi and he is one of the best filmmaker and story teller there is. He, like a lot of other travellers, are after the story of the locals. You can check out Jordi’s page on Facebook by clicking HERE.
I think this is a great way to travel and to discover a foreign city.
The Go with the Flow Traveller
Now these people are the type who doesn’t really have a plan of their own. They basically just go with the flow or whenever they meet other travellers, they just stick around and follow them. I am not saying that this is not a really good way to travel, because it can be fun and interesting at times. But for me, travelling is a way of life and it is something deeply personal so I believe that it should be done with purpose and with conviction.
Now these type of travellers are the ones who cannot leave home without their cameras with them. They pass by a monument, a building or a really famous landmark and they would take out their cameras and just take a picture. They seize the moment and they capture it through their lenses. They are the ones we run to whenever we feel like we need a new ‘profile picture’ or we need something to post on Instagram. They are the ones we would entrust our cameras too.
Although these types of travellers can get a bit annoying because they would always have to have the perfect shot. But whenever we see the pictures they have taken, we always remind ourselves that they’re worth tagging along with.
From three years of travelling, I have classified these five types of travellers and I think these are pretty accurate. Of course, correct me if I am wrong. I classify myself as a budget traveller, always. I tend to always challenge myself and just stick to the budget, but sometimes it can get a bit tricky. Ha!
So which one are you? Are you the luxurious traveller, the budget traveller, the couchsurfer, the go with the flow traveller or the photographer? No matter which type of traveller you classify yourself in to, the most important thing is that you–first and foremost, would classify yourself as a traveller. That’s what matters.
So save up, pack your bags and just go see the world. There is so much gem out there just waiting for you to discover! The world is wide and there is so many beautiful people and places to meet. Get out there and go!
