Last weekend, I did something that I have never done before–never even thought I would ever do it, if I am going to be honest. What is it? Well, I did my very first hitchhiking experience. In Africa, at that.
It is true, last weekend, a bunch of my co-volunteers and I went from Taroundant to Agadir and we have decided that we were going to hitchhike. It was about a 2-hour trip and we thought that a lot of people would go to Agadir since it was not that far. Plus, one of the girls, Laura, had done it before in Morocco. The other girl, Sania, had also done it before. I was the newbie. I have never done it before. To be honest, hitchhiking was not really a thing in the Philippines. I do not really know why, given the abundance of cars in the country. But it just was not a thing. So I have never hitchhiked before. Not even in the States. No idea why, but maybe I just was not brave enough. But I did it…in Africa.
To be fair, I understand that hitchhiking can be very dangerous and you really need to choose whom you get in the car with. If you feel uncomfortable with the person you are in the car with, you can always ask them to drop you off somewhere safe. That actually happened to me and Sania whilst we were hitchhiking back to Taroudant from Agadir. So the guy who was driving was actually drunk and was smoking weed in his car. It made me really nauseated and uneasy, he also kept on poking my legs. By that time, I was kind of freaked out already because we were two girls inside a car with a crazy person…but thank God I have my taser with me and felt a little bit safer. Then after a few more minutes, we asked him to just drop us off. He was not pleased, but he eventually dropped us off. I have never felt happier to just walk.
Although that was the only weird hitchhiking experience that I have. Hopefully, no more. If you are thinking, yes, I will still try to hitchhike. This coming weekend, I am going to another trip and I will try to hitchhike again. You see, some people are actually pretty nice and very generous. We got in a car with a fruit vendor and he said that he was not going to the place we are headed to but can drive us for 20KM, so he did. Then when we were getting out of the car, he saw a taxi and waved it. We got into the taxi and he just paid for the whole ride. It was amazing! I cannot believe, and I still am in awe at how surprisingly generous people can be. It was so nice to see God through these people’s eyes and generosity.
If you are ever considering hitchhiking, please be very careful. Hitchhiking is a very serious thing and you can get in trouble for it if you are not careful enough. Remember to choose wisely whom you get into the car with. Be very cautious, and trust your instincts. Pray to the Lord, of course, and ask for His protection. If you can carry a knife or pepper spray or a taser with you, that would be really good. I have a taser that doubles as a flashlight with me, so I feel more secure. Also, be do not sleep on the way…because you might not know where the drivers will take you. Of course, be smart. Although I applaud your bravery, and I wish you the best in your hitchhiking adventure! If you have any questions, let me know on the comments below and I will do my very best to answer them.
Au revoir, for now…time to sleep for me. Have a great day, wherever you are. Blessings!
